Faith in Focus Film Series

This program, open to ÎçÒ¹AV students and the general public, explores themes of faith in the lives of prominent figures in the Catholic Church. Feature film screenings are followed by discussions led by distinguished LUC professors or guest speakers.‌

  • Things Hidden: The Life and Legacy of René Girard Screening & Discussion with Director Sam Sorich and Producer Trevor Cribben Merrill

    As part of the Faith in Focus series, the Hank Center screened "Things Hidden: The Life and Legacy of René Girard" and facilitated a discussion with director Sam Sorich and producer Trevor Cribben Merrill. This is a timely new documentary about René Girard, the thinker who coined "mimetic desire." Offering a deeply personal portrait of Girard the man and a sweeping narrative of his unfolding thought, "Things Hidden: The Life and Legacy of René Girard" explores the French polymath's passion for intellectual discovery, his midlife religious conversion, and his quest to uncover the violent origins of human culture.
  • Screening of Father Stu with Featured Guest Mark Wahlberg

    We recently co-hosted a special premiere screening of Father Stu starring Mark Wahlberg here at ÎçÒ¹AV. Mark Wahlberg was in attendance for some comments and introduction to this film for a full audience at the Damen Cinema on campus. Father Stu is based on a true story of Father Stuart Long, an amateur boxer who discovered his calling in the Church.

    A moving portrayal of the real-life friendship between Pope Benedict XVI and the future Pope Francis. The Hank Center hosted a post-film discussion with Michael P. Murphy, Director of the Hank Center.
  • A Hidden Life (2019)

    October 20, 2020, 6:00 PM
    Inspired by true events, this compelling drama tells the story of Austrian man Franz Jägerstätter, who was a conscientious objector who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. The Hank Center hosted a post-film discussion led by Teresa Calpino, Instructor in Theology and Religious Studies. Free and open to the public. Registration required.

    Acclaimed film director Wim Wenders brings us a charismatic and captivating account of Pope Francis, shining a light on his unique, nonconformist, progressive, and honest papacy.
  • Fall 2018 Faith in Focus: The 1968 Film Series

    In Fall 2018, the Hank Center hosted weekly viewings of a selection of movies in the spirit of its 1968 Series.
  • Spring 2018 Faith in Focus Film: Frances Xavier Cabrini: The People's Saint (2017)

    This 50-minute documentary filmed in 2017, the Centenary year of Mother Cabrini's passing, is a living portrait of the Italy-born saint that showcases her relevance in an ever-changing world. Mother Cabrini is considered the Patron Saint of Immigrants and Hospital Administrators.
  • Fall 2017 Faith in Focus Film: The Ultimate Sacrifice (2017)

    The Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage presented a unique opportunity to view the documentary: The Ultimate Sacrifice (2017). This film is about Juozas Vitkus, a legendary Lithuanian Colonel who led a resistance movement against Soviet occupation in the 1940s and 50s. Post film discussion was led by special guest, grandson of Colonel Vitkus and former Jesuit Provincial of Lithuania and Latvia, Fr. Gintaras Vitkus, SJ.
  • Spring 2017 Faith in Focus Film: Ignacio de ÎçÒ¹AV (2016)

    Ignacio de ÎçÒ¹AV, directed by Paolo Dy and starring Andreas Muñoz is a thrilling look at the life of the founder of the Society of Jesus. The Jesuit leaders of ÎçÒ¹AV’s CLCs hosted a post-screening discussion.
  • Fall 2016 Faith in Focus Film: A Man for All Seasons (1966)

    The drama A Man for All Seasons, depicts the last years of Sir Thomas More's life under the reign of Henry VIII. Join us for a screening with an introduction Dr. Robert Bucholz from ÎçÒ¹AV's History Department.
  • Spring 2016 Faith in Focus Film: The Many Storeys and Last Days of Thomas Merton (2015)

    Join us for our first Faith in Focus film screening of the spring 2016 semester. We will be screening the recently released film The Many Storeys and Last Days of Thomas Merton, as well as engaging the film's producer, Morgan Atkinson, in a post-screening discussion.
  • Fall 2015 Faith in Focus Film: Full of Grace (2015)

    Join the Hank Center for its second Faith in Focus film of the semester. At this gathering, we will watch the 2015 film Full of Grace by Andrew Hyatt. Join us for the screening and post-screening discussion with Dr. Michael Murphy, Director of the Catholic Studies Minor at ÎçÒ¹AV.
  • Fall 2015 Faith in Focus Film: The Fourth Partition (2013)

    Join the Hank Center for our first Faith in Focus film of the semester. In conjunction with the Chicago Catholic Immigrants Conference: The Poles, we will be showing the 2013 documentary The Fourth Partition by Adrian Prawica. Join us for the film, and for a post-screening discussion with the director.
  • Spring 2015 Faith in Focus Film: Calvary (2014)

    The screening of Calvary will be followed by a post-screening discussion of the film with Dr. Michael Murphy (Director, Catholic Studies Minor, LUC).
