Fire Safety

Fire safety is the broad term used to describe the practices and measures designed to prevent fires, reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities, and minimize property damage.  Fire safety measures include those intended to prevent the ignition of a fire and those used to limit the impact and effect of a fire after it starts. Fire safety measures include those planned during the construction of a building or those implemented in structures that are already standing and include those that are taught to occupants of the building.

Threats to fire safety are commonly referred to as fire hazards. A fire hazard includes anything that increases the likelihood of a fire or may impede escape if a fire occurs. Fire safety is a critical component of building safety. Staff must have a basic knowledge of the fire action plan (ie: pull the fire alarm and call 911 in the event of a fire). Employee knowledge of the fire action plan is essential in the development and implementation of a successful fire safety program.
